I was thrilled to see an affordable cast iron roasting pan, so I bought one as soon as I could. The pan is perfect for our needs in terms of size and shape (very heavy as to be expected with cast iron). Unfortunately it has some VERY nasty “pre-seasoning” stuff adhered to the surface. I tried cooking on it (after washing it per the manufacturer’s instructions) and the whole house filled with the smell of hot petroleum jelly. I’ve contacted Heuck through their customer service email, but have not received a response after several weeks. We may try to remove the coating with a serious steel wool scrubbing, but I recommend saving your money and purchasing a better quality pan. I just read that Lodge’s pre-seasoning is done with vegetable oil, but that cast iron from China (where this is made) is often pre-seasoned with some kind of bake-on paint (I’m guessing petroleum-based due to the odor when heated).
